On being in Playboy:
"It was an independence thing for me. I was always by the book, such the straight arrow when it came to pleasing my parents and being a good daughter. I felt like this was one decision that only I could make. And I think it looks great. I'll have those pictures forever."

On having every aspect of her family's life recorded:
"If there's something that we're going through, it's going to get out anyway. It'll be on the cover of a tabloid, and it'll be twisted the completely wrong way. So why not tell our story?"

On women being comfortable with their body:
"It's a process. You have to learn to accept it. You have to learn to like what you see in the mirror. There are definitely times when I don't feel like myself, but you have to fake it until you make it."

But they don’t find out because I say, ‘hey, would you like to go to Valencia?’ Some people go to restaurants that are so popular. They say it’s really good food. You’re like, ‘what food is worth that?’ The lobster ceviche will be just as good in a to-go box.”

On handling fame: “I feel like I’ve been given a lot and I try to say thank you. The only thing I ask of myself is to try to keep my personal life personal. I will take as many pictures as you want, I will try to answer every single question under the sun, and the reason I’m doing that is so you’ll realize that I just have to keep something for myself.”

“I think it’s hard not to compare ‘Red Riding Hood’ because Catherine [Hardwicke] directed the first Twilight. But ‘Red Riding Hood’ is a very different film. I mean, yeah, there’s a love triangle, and people can easily compare the relationship between Kristen Stewart and those two guys in ‘Twilight’ to the Valerie, Henry, and Peter characters in this movie, but we have so many elements that make it completely different,” she says.

On being multi-talented: ‘I think my singing background has actually helped me tremendously. It certainly has something to do with why I am doing what I am doing today. So, obviously, it means something. But people just don’t seem to feel like it’s as important to have a variety of skills as a performer like that anymore.’

On whether her parents always supported her interest, even as a child performer: ‘Oh, yeah. They loved it. I honestly think they were as cool as parents get. They loved me being happy. They both worked, but they both had enough time to spend with me. So I didn’t really go into the arts for any specific reason. It was just to find a vessel for all of my energy. And also because I’m not good at anything else. I’m just really not equipped for, say, academics or sports.’

I would meet a guy, then I would imagine myself married and with kids within the first hour. [Laughs] But it worked out.”

I went to a Jean Paul Gaultier show, and I saw girls who are thicker than me, beautiful and voluptuous and different ethnicities. That made me so excited. I thought, Okay, I can work that, for sure."

Gwen Stefani's had a life long obsession with clothes:

'I made so many clothes growing up and I used to do my own costumes. Like, in college – we'd have a concert coming up and all I would do was daydream about what I was going to make. It's the same now. Fashion gets me so excited.'

She's sung about her love of Vivienne Westwood and John Galliano – she wore a Galliano gown for her wedding to Gavin Rossdale in 2002 – but she's also a successful fashion designer herself, producing two collections a year for her L.A.M.B label.

The move from singer to fashion designer was calculated however… Gwen told to the magazine 'I wanted so badly to have a backup plan for when I' not performing any more. Let's be realistic: it's not going to be like this forever.'

Gwen's got two cute kids and reveals their different personalities: 'We call [Kingston] Sid, like Sid Vicious. He's a little punk.' And Zuma? 'He wants everyone to watch him and he's a goofball, he's really silly. He's a funny guy.'

Does she keep in touch or follow their careers?

'Would I see a movie of Ben’s? Sure! Why not? I haven't seen him or talked to him in a while - our lives went in two very different directions. But I always wish him the best and I always thought he was a great person. And Sean - I've run into him once or twice, with Marc, and it's always very friendly. He asks about the twins because he has twins too. Again, I always wish him the best.'

Lopez knows how to tow a diplomatic line, a skill no doubt picked up after years of ugly scrutiny. She understands that today’s negative comment is tomorrow’s headline news, so prefers to keep things civil and... nice. When asked whether she approves of some of the edgier artists, like Gaga and Rihanna, who have come to the fore since her hiatus her response is unequivocal: 'I love them all. Honestly.'

On her reputation as a diva

We talk about her reputation as something of a diva. A week earlier, at the marie claire cover shoot, there had been much delicious speculation as to exactly which Jennifer Lopez would turn up on the day. One of the studio technicians claimed he'd worked with her ten years previously, when, she allegedly demanded four separate rooms for changing, each adorned with a different type of particular flower. In the event she arrived accompanied by minimal, was incredibly warm and friendly to all, and, in the afternoon, even brought along her twins to watch their very famous mom in action.

So was there any truth in rumours such as insisting her coffee has to be stirred the right way or her hotel room bed must be strewn with feathers? 'No!' she laughs. 'I mean.... when you're in our position and working as much as I was at that time people try to make you very comfortable, because you're the worker - and they want you to keep working.'

While we’re telling the truth – was your bum ever insured for millions of dollars?

'No! Though I thought that story was funny. In fact, we traced that story, and that was a rumour that started in London.'

We're an evil people.

'I didn't say evil!'

Cheeky then...

'No pun intended.'

Did she secretly love all the attention?

'I honestly at that time was in such a work fog I didn't even notice. Now that I've had time to sit I appreciate and love everything in a different way, and I think that's because of the kids too. I just think of life in a different way: back then it was just about the grind.'

She says it was time to live, to become a real person once again, that in the bubble of work you’re not really living. She talks of being an artist and replenishing her artistic soul; to be able to draw on life’s experiences so in turn she can channel those experiences back into her art.

On the frenzied fascination with her curves, her derriere in particular,

Of all the fuss, she recalls: 'I was always very comfortable with who I was. Confident. I've never looked at myself [my body] in a negative way.'

Nowadays she likes to do weights, and run through the horse trails of her new neighbourhood. Then there’s the food...

'Just like anybody I try to watch what I eat - there's no big science to it, which is what sucks. One of the good tricks is to have a goal – for me it may be getting in shape for a video shoot. The other is portion control. I love to eat everything and you pretty much can - a little piece of something fattening is not going to kill you. It's when you eat the whole box that it's going to kill you. If you can learn to not eat till your stomach feels full and gross, then you can pretty much control your life in that area.'

Had she not had a husband, would she have considered becoming a single mother?

'For me, I always had the fairy tale in my head where you get married, have kids and do all that kind of stuff,' she says. 'But I also think it's a wonderful thing for women who haven’t had babies and get to a point in their lives and have that option. As a woman, I think it's the best thing that can ever happen to you.'

On Marc Anthony

Prior to that, the best thing that happened to Jennifer was living her very own Harry Met Sally by navigating that treacherous route from friend to lover with latin singing superstar Marc Anthony, the man who’d been her confidante for many years.

'I think there was always this very strong chemistry with Marc and I from the very beginning, and he was always letting me know that,' she says. 'Since we first met I always felt that, if I got into trouble, he was the one person I could call and he would always be there. That to me is love in its purest form.'

I ask if moving from friend to lover was an awkward journey. She says no, that there was always an attraction there, and lets slip that it wasn’t the first time they’d ever been romantic.

'We kind of did [get together] in the beginning,' she admits. 'We saw each other for a little bit, then kind of went our separate ways for many years because we were both in different places in our lives. Now we have the kind of love with no question mark.'

ON returning to The Hills
MTV had asked me for the past four years to come on the show but the whole reason I didn’t is because it was Lauren’s show and I felt like if I went on, it would have been the same thing as Laguna Beach, where Lauren and I would probably be fighting over some guy. So, I really wanted to focus on acting and challenge myself in other ways. Then with her leaving, they were really putting the pressure on me to come back, so I thought, “Why not? I have no real reason not to.” I am really glad that I went back because I have had the best time.

On being single
I don’t know. I have always had boyfriends my whole life up until about two years ago when I broke up with my ex-boyfriend. I have really enjoyed being single for the past few years, but I think that now I am ready to have a boyfriend if the right person came along.

American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee is showing off her hot new blonde hairdo - as she talks about why she chopped off her trademark brunette locks.

The 25-year-old singer, who has been open about her battle with bulimia, opens up during an interview with US magazine Shape.

She reveals the reason behind her stunning new platinum blonde look - and how she took the plunge to change her image.

'I was feeling rebellious,' McPhee explains, describing the moment she told her hair stylist she wanted a new do.

'That's when I knew I wanted something big. So I said to my stylist: 'Just chop it all off and make me a blonde!''

McPhee then celebrated her dramatic hairstyle by buying herself a new wardrobe.

'I felt edgy and playful,' she says. 'I went out and bought new clothes for the new me. It was definitely a good thing to do.'

The former bulimic is also confident about her figure, which she keeps in tip-top shape by working out with an LA-based personal trainer.

'The more I focused on my weight the worse my bulimia got,' says McPhee who completed an outpatient programme to combat her eating disorder in 2006.

'Now I'm more easygoing. I stopped fighting myself and became more forgiving of my body.

'Ironically, the weight came off naturally through exercise but no dieting.

'At my last physical, the nurse took my vitals and said: 'Wow, you must be taking care of yourself! Your blood pressure is perfect. You're very healthy'.

'Hearing her say that made me feel better than seeing an 'ideal' number on the scale.'

The actress said she had deliberately shied away from "sex object" status after her Lolita-esque role in Leon, aged 12, prompted a flurry of "weird" letters from men.

"The good-girl image was something I consciously cultivated after Leon," she told Elle magazine.

"There was a lot of controversy about the whole Lolita thing. My parents were super-protective about it, but I got a lot of weird letters. It was really upsetting. I didn't want to be seen as a sex object, so I went in the opposite direction.

"I'm definitely not a prude about sex or nudity, I just don't want to do something that will end up as a screen grab on a porn site."

The star of Closer, Garden State and the Star Wars movies recently played a Hasidic bride in New York, I Love You - the first role that plays on her Jewish heritage.

She explained: "I've always tried to stay away from playing Jews. I get, like, 20 Holocaust scripts a month, but I hate the genre. That was the first thing to come my way that really intrigued me."

The actress is now ready to tackle a comic role. "It wasn't that I didn't want to do comedy, it's just just that I would only get offered girlfriend parts in guy comedies where the woman has to have a job in fashion so that she can have nice clothes, and her goal is always marriage. I'm more interested in finding characters that make me laugh."
